2021 is the 36th issue of the Silver Eagle since its introduction in 1986 and has been issued annually. The most popular silver bullion coin in the world is the Silver Eagle. The mintage numbers of the Silver Eagle have fluctuated between 4 million and 47 million since its first release, with 1996 having the most limited mintage and 2015 having the largest mintage. Due to their very low mintage numbers relative to today’s norms, you can see high premiums on the Silver Eagles from 1994 to 1998. Due to it being the first launch, the 1986 version also has a high premium. A total of nearly 20 million eagles have been minted per year in recent years, which is equivalent to the Silver Maple Leaf, which many people say is a near second to the Silver Eagle when it comes to prominence.

2021 Silver Eagle Highlights:

  • 1 troy ounce of 999 pure silver in Brilliant Uncirculated condition
  • 35th Anniversary for the American Eagle Coin Program
  • Obverse design: The Walking Liberty
  • Reverse design: The famous Heraldic Eagle

The 2021 Silver Eagle Design

The US Mint has decided to change the design of both the 2021 Silver Eagle’s reverse and the Gold Eagle’s reverse halfway through 2021. This will mark the first time in Silver Eagle history that the coin will have a major design change and two different designs in the same year.

Silver Eagle Obverse Design

In her flowing garments, the obverse of the 2021 Silver Eagle coin shows the classic image of Lady Liberty striding towards a sun that breaks the mountainous horizon. She holds an olive branch in her left palm, and in front of her, she reaches her right arm. She is also draped in the breeze with an American flag which is blowing. To the right of her, the US motto that is minted on all US coins, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is minted with the word “LIBERTY,” minted around the top of the coin with spread out characters. The coin year “2021” is going to be minted at the very beginning. The obverse layout is based on the design for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar by Adolph Weinman.

Silver Eagle Reverse Design

For the first half of 2021, the reverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle will show the famous Heraldic Eagle form, which is a bald eagle with a shield featuring stripes in front of it. In its beak, the eagle carries a flag with the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and in one claw, the eagle grasps a branch and arrows in the other. There are 13 stars above the eagle’s head, and above that are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. Minted below the eagle are the words “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR”.

The Silver Eagles Mintage

Using 1 troy ounce of 999 pure silver, 2021 Silver Eagles are minted and the coins will be in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coin only weighs 1 ounce, while its gold equivalent weighs 1 ounce, 1⁄2 ounce, 1⁄4 ounce, and 1/10 oz. The US Mint gets the silver blanks they use from the Idaho-based Sunshine Mint, a well regarded private mint. Until use with the Silver Eagles, each blank is tested by a US Mint employee by hand and the mint often randomly chooses blanks to be sent to their laboratory with tests to ensure that the blanks are the right size, weight, density, and purity. In addition, before they are put in their tubes and then in the eagle monster boxes for shipping from the mint plant, each Silver Eagle is often examined by hand. The count of 20 per tube is also checked before the mint straps are sealed in the case.
